At RubberStampSA, we love seeing the creative ways our customers bring stamps into their work. This month, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Sujay Sanan, a Cape Town–based artist whose drawings explore our place in the natural world and our relationship with other life-forms.
Art Rooted in Nature
Sujay has been fascinated by the natural world for as long as he can remember. His art reflects both his convictions and his uncertainties about humanity’s role on the planet. Deeply inspired by evolutionary biology and natural history, he draws as much from science as from fellow artists. His work also carries echoes of centuries-old traditions — from the intricate precision of Indian miniature paintings and the meditative detail of Buddhist Thangka art to the accuracy of botanical illustrations once used for scientific study.
Through this unique blend of influences, Sujay creates pieces that are both contemplative and meticulous, urging viewers to slow down and pay attention to the fragile details of life we so often overlook.
Recognition Beyond Borders
Over the past decade, Sujay has exhibited widely, with five solo exhibitions and numerous group shows. He has collaborated with organisations such as WWF and Wavescape, raising awareness and funds for conservation through his art. In 2023, his drawing of a Southern Right whale and her calf was even selected for South Africa’s 5 Rand coin, placing his work in the hands of millions.
With over 150 original artworks sold, his pieces now form part of collections in 11 countries, including Austria, Germany, India, the United States, and South Africa. Each new body of work is developed with a deliberate study of medium and narrative, often unfolding over the course of an entire year.
A Stamp with Purpose
For a recent gallery date, Sujay used a large Woody stamp to create his own business cards. More than just a practical solution, the stamp allowed him to produce cards that carried the same intentionality and authenticity as his art. Each card became a small, tactile extension of his philosophy of living slowly, working with purpose, and staying connected to the material process of making.
It’s a perfect example of how something as simple as a stamp can be transformed into a meaningful creative tool — one that communicates not only information, but also identity and ethos.
Why We’re Inspired
In his words:
“In the act of drawing, I seek to record what we may lose and have already lost in this swiftly transforming, human-centred planet. At the same time, my work also seeks to invite a meditation on the details of our environment that we tend to rush past.”
Sujay’s art is a reminder of the fragility of the world we inhabit and the importance of slowing down to appreciate it. His use of a Woody stamp to carry his message into something as everyday as a business card reminds us why we love what we do — stamps make impressions that last.
